DATELINE:
Swanton, Vermont Douglas Lee Coleman, age 69 years, a longtime
resident of Grand Avenue in Swanton Village, died Wednesday morning January
4, 2012, in the Franklin County Rehab Center with loving family at his side. Born in Hartford, CT on October 9, 1942, he
was the son of the late Gordon "Pudgie"
and Mildred "Millie" (Aylward) Coleman.
He graduated from Swanton High School and on August 22, 1964, was married to
the former Beverly Durgin who survives him. Prior to
his retirement Doug had been associated for 40 years as a foreman with Ayerst-Wyeth in Rouses Point, NY. Doug will always be remembered throughout the
area as an avid sportsman and outstanding athlete who played baseball,
basketball and softball for at least five decades. He also coached girls
basketball at Swanton High School for several years. He is also remembered as
a homebody and devoted family man who adored his wife, children and
grandchildren and was meticulous about his home and property. He loved to
dance and had been given the nickname "Disco Doug" by many of his
friends. In addition to his wife Beverly of 47 years,
Doug leaves two children, Kelly Coleman Merrill and her husband Todd of
Swanton and Christopher Coleman of Winooski, Owner of CK's Sports Bar. Also
surviving are two grandchildren, Mikayla and Mattheau Merrill; his brother Timothy Coleman and wife
Maureen of W. Swanton; his faithful feline companion Sophie as well as
numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by
a brother, Francis Coleman. Doug's family would like to express their
sincerest gratitude to the Franklin County Home Health Agency and Hospice Program, especially Dianna Hodet, Darlene Larose and Sue Howrigan,
they were true angels of mercy. Also to the Northwestern Medical Center
including the Concierge and Pastoral Care Departments as well as the staff of
the Franklin County Rehab Center for all of their professional care, love and
support during Doug's last days. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Monday January 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Longtime family friend,
Father Marcel R. Rainville, SSE will be the
celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at
the Coleman family lot in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home,
89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. Gifts in Doug's memory may be made to the Franklin
