OBITUARY:  Muriel Eleanor “Mert” Dexter

DATELINE:   Highgate Springs, Vermont

 

Muriel “Mert” Dexter, age 86 years, a longtime Highgate Springs resident died early Friday morning September 23, 2011, in the Franklin County Rehab Center.

 

Born in Philipsburg, Quebec Canada on March 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Mable (Butler) Guthrie. She graduated from Philipsburg schools and on April 24, 1946, was married to Bernard George Dexter who predeceased her on February 19, 1995 following 49 years of marriage.

 

In addition to her responsibilities as a wife and mother, Mert worked several years at The High Gate Restaurant and Martins store in Highgate Springs as well as Taylor Marine in Swanton and Thermal Wire of South Hero. She will be remembered as an expert at knitting and an avid Bingo player.

 

She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Everett Vanslette and her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lise Dexter all of Highgate Springs; three grandsons and their wives, Daniel and Heather Vanslette of Fairfax, Jeremy and Donna Vanslette of Rochester, NY and Matthew and Jodi Dexter of St. Albans; five great grandchildren, Caleb and Logan Vanslette, Storm Watson and Ian and Riley Dexter; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Flora Guthrie; a sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Marcel Plouff all of Phillipsburg; two sisters-in-law, Florence and Geraldine Dexter both of Highgate Springs and many nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her parents and husband Bernard, Mert was predeceased by a sister, Laura and her husband Hugh Symington; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Delbert Martin, E. Thomas Dexter and Ralph Dexter.

 

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday September 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Thomas D. Nadeau will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Dexter family lot in Saint Louis Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Mert’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Rehab Center Activity Fund, 110 Fairfax Road, St. Albans 05478 or to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans 05478.
