Roland E. Edwards, died September 18, 2011, at the Carriage House in Franklin, Vermont with his family by his side.

 

 He was born in Old Saybrook, Connecticut on October 16, 1918, and was raised by his grandparents, Melville and Minnie Day Edwards in Massachusetts and Vermont.  He graduated from Vermont Academy in Saxtons River class of 1936.  He continued his education at Vermont State School of Agriculture (now Vermont Technical College), graduating in 1940.  He farmed in Cambridgeport, Vermont and developed a national award winning Registered Jersey herd.  Later he worked as a machinist at Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield, Vermont, retiring in 1981.

 

He married Ursula J. Brosnan on March 26, 1941, who predeceased him.  Together they raised two children, a son John Edwards and his wife Deanna of Swanton, a daughter Jane Edwards of South Burlington.  They had 3 grand children, Aimee Batten, Jonathan Edwards and Margaret Aycock and 4 step-grandchildren, Jennifer, Wendy, Matthew and Jeffrey Fuller, 5 great-grand children, Tyler Sharrock, Shayna and Alyssa Batten, Brooke and Mia Edwards, and 2 step-great grandchildren, Norah and Asa Gates.

 

A dedicated reader, he always encouraged his children and grandchildren to further their education with degrees from UVM, Castleton, Middlebury, Purdue, Northeastern and City University of NY.  He was a member of King Solomon’s Temple Lodge of Masons in Bellows Falls, Vermont for more than 65 years.

 

Edwards, RA Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Homestead, Felco Room, Franklin, Vermont where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.  A Luncheon will be served immediately following.  A private interment will be in the Saxtons River Cemetery at a later date.

 

 Local arrangements are under the direction of Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, Vermont 05488.

 

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Roland’s memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health or the Carriage House, Franklin.
