OBITUARY: Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp

DATELINE: Swanton/St. Albans

 

Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp, 87, of St. Albans and formerly, for many years of Swanton, died peacefully, Thursday, April 17, 2008 following a brief illness.

 

Born in Fletcher on July 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elazer and Jennie (Thompson) Taylor.  Catherine was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Amory in 1997.

 

Catherine was well known in Swanton for her baking and cooking skills, often providing meals at the Swanton American Legion where she was a lifetime member and also frequently assisted Amory as bartender and chief cook and bottle washer.

 

Mrs. Grandchamp loved and had amazing healing powers with animals.  People often dropped off sick dogs, cats, birds and a menagerie of other animals that Catherine nursed back to health.  She also had that talent with people, often taking in boarders in her Swanton home.

 

In her last four years, Catherine lived with her only and beloved daughter, Tina Lang and family of St. Albans.  For the last five months, Catherine was a resident of Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center where she made many friends.

 

She is survived by her only daughter, Tina Lang and Tina’s husband, Scott; grandchildren Amanda Connelly and her husband Randall of Highgate, Kyle Gagner and his friend Missy LaBounty of Fairfield and Allison Gagner of St. Albans as well as their father, Clovis Gagner of St. Albans.  Catherine is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Blake Connelly and Kaleb Gagner and several nieces and nephews.  In addition, Catherine and Amory helped to raise two nephews, Sonny Austin of Virginia who survives her and Neil Austin who predeceased her in 2000.   She was predeceased by all of her siblings.

 

Catherine’s family would like to warmly acknowledge the care and support she received from the office and staff of Dr. Ned Shulman, Franklin County Home Health, Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center and particularly the caring and compassionate nursing staff and doctors at Northwestern Medical Center.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11 AM at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton where friends may call prior to the service from 10-11 AM.  Following interment in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Swanton, Catherine’s family will host a reception at the home of Tina and Scott Lang, 29 Adams St., St. Albans.
