DATELINE:  East Highgate, Vermont

 

Barbara Arlene Hanna, age 88 years, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, June 22, 2010, with her loving family at her side.

 

Born in St. Albans, VT on, July 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late George and Flora (Coburn) Firkey. She attended Highgate schools and graduated from the former Highgate High School. On June 30, 1946 she was married to F. Merriman Hanna who predeceased her on June 28, 2009 after 63 years of marriage.

 

Barbara will always be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who with great care looked after many family members and faithfully supported her husband Merriman. She was a longtime parishioner of the Highgate United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women serving in the choir, as a teacher and helping with the many fund raising events that were held. In her earlier years, she greatly enjoyed going to local dances with Merriman and her friends. She continued to enjoy listening to music especially her favorite hymns and took comfort in reading inspirational books and her Bible everyday.

 

She leaves her children, Sharon Rheaume and husband Normand of East Highgate, Galen Hanna and wife Diane of Arizona and Georgia, VT and Gary Hanna of East Highgate and his friend Emily Buskey; her sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Lawrence Desorcie of Zephyr Hills, FL; five grandchildren, Brian Hanna and his wife Michelle, Lisa Ayer and her husband Tim, David and Aimee Rheaume and Torrey Hanna; five great grandchildren, Mitchell and Bryn Hanna, Delaney, Emerson and Camden Ayer as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her parents and husband, Barbara was predeceased by her brother Raymond Firkey in 2002 and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hanna in 1992.

 

Barbara’s family extends their “Sincerest Thanks” to the Franklin County Home Health Agency especially Jeannette Bosley, Nicole Ward and Terry Poirier as well as Marie Fitzgerald for all of their love, care and support.

 

A Funeral Service will be held Wed., June 30, 2010, at 4 p.m. from the Highgate United Methodist Church, Highgate Center. Lay Speaker and family friend, Mrs. Deborah Grennon will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hanna family lot in the East Highgate Cemetery. Friends may call at the church prior to the service on Wed. beginning at 2:30 p.m. Gifts in Barbara’s memory may be made to the, Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans 05478.
