Messier, R #1OBITUARY:  Robert E. Messier

DATELINE:  Highgate Center, Vermont

 

Robert E. Messier, age 86 years, a lifelong area resident died Tuesday evening August 9, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

 

Born in St. Albans on April 6, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph Alfred and Lauretta (Tatro) Messier. He attended schools in Franklin and in 1947 was married to the former Norma I. Cross who predeceased him on August 3, 1992 following 64 years of marriage. Prior to his retirement, Bob had been employed by the Energizer Corporation of St. Albans for nearly 40 years. 

 

Bob faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Army serving in Normandy, Belgium and during the Liberation of MC910217052[1]France. He was honorably discharged as a Sargent First Class. He was a life member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert Glidden Post 758, St. Albans.

 

As an avid outdoorsman Bob loved hunting white tailed deer and fishing beaver ponds for brook trout as well as riding his ATV. He was a member of both Ducks and Trout Unlimited. He enjoyed playing baseball and was a longtime member of the Union Carbide Softball Team and in earlier years played professionally for the St. Albans League.

 

He leaves his son, David Messier of Highgate Center; a sister, Idolyn Robinson of Augusta, ME; a granddaughter Summer Lynn Messier of Franklin; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

Messier, R #2Besides his parents and his wife Norma, Bob was predeceased by a son, James Elwood Messier in 1948 and a sister, Genevieve Johnson.

 

Funeral Services with military honors will be private with Father Thomas D. Nadeau officiating. There will be no public calling hours.
