DATELINE: Swanton /
Highgate Center, Vermont Jean Luc Poulin,
age 84 years, a longtime Swanton resident and more recently of Highgate Center died at his home early Wednesday morning
December 7, 2011, with loving family at his side. Born in Sainte Theophile,
Quebec Canada on February 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Victor and
Blanche (Grondin) Poulin.
He attended schools in Canada and on August 2, 1948, was married to the
former Madeline Marie Lacroix who predeceased him on
July 14, 2007, following 59 years of marriage. Jean began his years in construction working
for Rodd the Roofer in St. Johnsbury and locally
with the Swanton Lumber Company. In 1970 he established Poulin
Roofing and Siding that he owned and operated for many years. He later worked
several years for Handy Pontiac where he was always known as Mr. Fix-it. In
earlier years, especially during the winter months he worked as a bartender
for the Alpine Haven Lodge on Jay Peak and also at the former Pine Restaurant
in Highgate Springs. As an active member of the community he
served as a longtime member and past president of the Swanton Chamber of
Commerce as well as chairperson of the Swanton Festival Committee. In 1980 he
was awarded the Swanton Citizen of the Year Award. He was also a life member
of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #1566 of St. Albans and
served as the Grand Exalted Ruler. He was a faithful parishioner of The
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was a longtime usher and a
former member of the Knights of Columbus. Jean was also a longtime member of
the Champlain Country Club. In more recent years Jean worked with the annual
St Albans Maple Festival. Jean leaves his wife the former Cecile
(Martin) Laroche of Highgate
Center; three daughters, Suzanne Harvey - Safford and husband Steve of
Westford, Claire Stimets and husband Warren and
Louise Laroche and husband Guy all of Swanton;
three sons, Robert Poulin and partner Donald Raum of Tuchahoe, NY, John Poulin and his wife Tammy Brown of Georgia, and Allan Poulin and partner Alan Chiet
of Silver Spring, MD; 12 grandchildren, Duncan Harvey and wife Karen, Carrie
Ann McAdoo and husband Michael, Jon Stimets and
wife Amy, US Air Force Cpt. Justin Stimets and wife
Lindsey, Matthew Laroche and companion Kim Aher, VTANG SFC Michael Laroche
and wife Shelley, Nicolette and Bethany Poulin, Kristen,
Katelynn and Allison Poulin
and Abigail Ledoux; 8 great grandchildren, Ethan
and Emily Harvey, Tyler and Isabelle Laroche,
Evelyn and Wyatt McAdoo and Owen and Addilin Stimets; Cecile's children, Jocelyn Tedford
and husband Michael and Patrick Laroche and wife
Kay; six brothers and sisters, Raymonde Leroux, Marc Poulin and wife
Mariette and Giselle LaPierre all of St. Johnsbury, Loisette Bolduc and
Sister Suzanne (Yolande) Poulin
CND both of Bridgeport, CT and Hugette Biathrow of Largo, FL as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife
Madeline, Jean was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Poulin. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Monday, December 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father Thomas
D. Nadeau will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and
Interment will follow at the Poulin family lot in
Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home,
89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Gifts in Jeans memory may be made to the,
